Understanding Inflammation Markers in Healthy Individuals

Rose Calixte, Ph.D., Epidemiology and Biostatistics assistant professor, Marlene Camacho-Rivera, Sc.D., M.S., MPH, School of Public Health assistant dean for student affairs and assistant professor, and College of Medicine student Zachary Ye examined inflammatory markers in health individuals using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Their study, “Demographic and Social Patterns of the Mean Values of Inflammatory Markers in U.S. Adults,” published in the journal Diseases 2023, established mean values of inflammatory markers in healthy individuals, with the goal of better understanding the implications of elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratios associated with many medical conditions, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Possibly the largest study of its kind to date, the analysis showed that in healthy individuals, NLR and PLR values—which generally correlate with high mortality and poor prognosis in those who are ill—vary significantly with race, age, and smoking status. The research has important clinical implications and underscores the need for culturally sensitive risk assessment and disease predictions.
