Construction has Begun

By Office of the President | Feb 7, 2023

Across the campus, we continue to improve and enhance Downstate’s facilities to improve campus life for our community.

Energy-Efficient Entry

It’s new, modern, hygienic, accessible, and convenient. The all-glass automatic revolving door at the Health Science Education Building entrance is now fully installed and operational!

Why a revolving door? Well, a revolving door is eight times more energy-efficient than a sliding door, lowering Downstate’s carbon footprint and elevating our sustainability profile. And they operate under the principle of “always closed, yet always open.” Further, they create a constant seal between the interior and exterior of a building, keeping out dust and dirt as well as wind and rain. At the same time, their “no hands” automatic movement improves access and minimizes exposure to germs.

A New Cafeteria on the Menu

Construction has begun on Downstate’s cafeteria renovation project. When fully implemented, the look and feel of the dining experience at Downstate will be wholly transformed.

The project will expand square footage, overhaul food stations, add more glass and light, and offer flexible space. The new cafeteria will be an inviting place where students, faculty, staff, and visitors can sit, socialize, or study over a cup of coffee, hold meetings, and enjoy a meal. While the cafeteria space will be open 24 hours, meals will be served only during stated hours, and a grab-and-go station will be available at all hours. Various healthful food options responsive to dietary needs and preferences, including plant-based choices, will be available. The new cafeteria will also include exterior design improvements that will enhance Downstate’s outward-facing “curb appeal” to the external community.

New Downstate Signage in the Works

As part of Downstate’s campaign to advance our new brand identity, we anticipate new external campus signage in the next few months. Our new logo and name will be featured prominently on the Public Health Academic Building on Clarkson Avenue and the Health Science Education Building.

New signage representing Downstate Health—the new sub-brand for our clinical offerings will soon be visible around the campus. Downstate Health will use the same logo as Downstate Health Sciences University but will be distinguished by a complimentary color palette in soft, soothing green, and will initially be applied to the Emergency Department wayfinding signs on campus street corners and inpatient and outpatient entrance awnings on Clarkson Avenue and Lenox Road.
