Transplant Services

When you're living with end-stage kidney disease, you need a team to help you find the right care. The caring professionals in SUNY Downstate's transplant program will be with you through every step of the process.

A Legacy of Care

We performed our first kidney transplant in 1965. Since then, we have been at the forefront of advanced care, while treating every patient with the highest level of care. Downstate recruited Dr. Samuel Kountz in 1972 to become the professor and chair of the department of surgery.  He accepted, saying he wanted to improve medical care for African Americans in urban areas like Brooklyn.  We strive to honor his memory and continue his mission today.
