Transplant Clinic

Caring for your new kidney is a lifetime commitment. In the weeks and months after your transplant, we'll be especially vigilant for signs of complication.

After Your Surgery

In the weeks after you're released from the hospital, you'll visit our outpatient clinic twice a week for observation. As your kidney stabilizes, the visits will become monthly.

Before Your Visit

  • Unless you're told otherwise, you can eat a regular breakfast and drink fluids before you come to the clinic.
  • Take medications as usual, except for Prograf (Tacrolimus) or Cyclosporine (Neural). Bring those with you to the clinic.
  • Check whether you need refills for any medications. Be sure you'll have enough to last until the subsequent visit.

When You Arrive

The outpatient clinic (Suite C) is on the first floor of the hospital. Tell the clerk at the reception desk whether you take Prograf (Tacrolimus) or Cyclosporine (Neoral).

After checking in, you'll provide urine and blood samples in the laboratory, which is part of the outpatient clinic. Wait until your blood samples have been drawn before taking Prograf (Tacrolimus) or Cyclosporine (Neoral). You should take these medications as soon as your lab work is complete.

During the Visit

A nurse will take your temperature, weight, and blood pressure before you see the doctor.

On every visit, your doctor will review your medications and make adjustments as needed. Be sure to have your list of medications. Changes are especially likely early in the post-transplant period.

Be sure to ask for any prescription refills as needed.

Following your visit, you'll set up your next appointment. It's easier to set up an appointment while your chart is out, so we ask that you take care of this before leaving.

After Your Visit

We'll process the results of your lab tests within a day of your visit. If your doctor finds any problems or wants to change your medication, we'll be in touch. But you don't have to wait to hear from us: If you're curious about your results, feel free to call the office a day after your visit.
