Oculoplastics / Orbit Service

ethcing of eye

SUNY Downstate has two full time highly-skilled oculoplastic surgeons – Dr. Roman Shinder and Dr. Nickisa Hodgson. They see patients at the Eye Center at Midwood and University Ophthalmic Consultants at Brooklyn Heights offices, and are trained in both ophthalmology and plastic surgery around the eyes and face. Drs. Shinder and Hodgson are able to diagnose and treat any oculoplastic disease – from children to adults, from the functional to the cosmetic, involving the orbit (eye socket), lacrimal system (tear gland and duct) and the eyelids and face. The SUNY Downstate Oculoplastic Service has a rich history of performing pioneering work for various conditions. Following a comprehensive examination, treatment options will be given that can include either medical or surgical therapies. Depending on the diagnosis, surgery may be performed either in the office under local anesthesia or in an outpatient operating room under sedation. There is a fully equipped minor procedure room in each of our offices, where many simple procedures can safely be done. When needed, our doctors collaborate with colleagues in other services including dermatology, ear, nose, and throat (ENT), endocrinology, and oncology, among others, to provide excellent multi-disciplinary care.
