It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month
By Office of Communications & Marketing | Oct 1, 2026
Each October, we honor those we have lost to breast cancer, celebrate survivors, and
support those facing the disease: our patients, colleagues, neighbors, friends, and
families across Brooklyn.
Our commitment to Keep Care Close means providing breast care here in our community, from screening to treatment. At University Hospital at Downstate, our Breast Imaging Center offers digital and 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, and image-guided biopsies. Specialists in radiology, breast and reconstructive surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology work together to guide each patient’s care.
How we care for people matters. Finding a lump or needing a biopsy can be frightening. Clear explanations, reassurance, and time for questions can ease that fear. Sometimes, a little humor at the right moment helps you breathe again. Expertise, sensitivity, and warmth can make a difficult experience easier for patients and families.
Although breast cancer is much more common in women, men can develop breast cancer, too. Downstate also provides breast imaging services for men. Talk with your healthcare provider about your family history, personal risk, any breast changes, and the screening schedule appropriate for you.
To schedule a mammogram at Downstate, call 718-270-7333. Free breast cancer screenings are also available for eligible uninsured and underinsured New York residents. For eligibility information, call 718-270-3739 or 718-270-8245.
Watch Lisa Dresner, M.D., FACS, share her breast cancer awareness message on Downstate TV about regular mammograms and seeking care for a breast health concern. Share it with someone who may need the reminder.
Support extends beyond the appointment. Listening, accompanying someone to a visit, or helping with everyday responsibilities can make a difference for patients, families, and employees facing breast cancer. Details are coming soon for our PINK THURSDAY Group Photo on October 29, 2026, in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
