Volunteer to Be a Buddy – Support Our New Employees at SUNY Downstate

Dear Downstate Community,

Do you remember your first days at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University—when everything was new, you didn’t know anyone yet, and you had a million questions?

Now, you have the opportunity to make that transition easier for someone else.

Through the Buddy System, you can be that welcoming face who helps new hires feel comfortable, supported, and ready to succeed. We are currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers to serve as Buddies at New Employee Orientation (NEO), and we encourage you to help spread the word to anyone who may be interested.

What is the Buddy System?

The Buddy System pairs existing employees with new hires to help them navigate Downstate during their first 90 days. This initiative ensures every new team member receives a warm welcome and has a trusted colleague to turn to for guidance and support.

What Do Buddies Do?

Buddies play an important role in helping new employees feel connected and confident by:

• Providing a warm and welcoming introduction to Downstate
• Sharing insights about their work experience and what makes Downstate unique
• Offering guidance and answering questions about processes and procedures
• Supporting new hires as they acclimate to the Downstate culture
• Checking in periodically during the first 90 days

This is NOT a significant time commitment—just meaningful touchpoints as needed. As a thank you, both the Buddy and the new employee will receive a cafeteria voucher to enjoy coffee or a meal together!

Who Can Participate?

You are eligible to serve as a Buddy if you:

• Have been with Downstate for at least one year
• Consistently meet or exceed performance expectations
• Have a strong understanding of the organization
• Demonstrate patience, a teaching spirit, and a willingness to support others
• Model our core values
