Celebrating 2026 Lunar New Year: The Year of the Horse

By Office of Communications & Marketing | Feb 17, 2026

Lunar New YearTuesday, February 17, 2026, marks the commencement of the Lunar New Year—a momentous cultural celebration that holds deep significance for many East and Southeast Asian communities. This holiday signifies the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar.

The Lunar New Year is a 15-day celebration that begins with a grand feast known as the family reunion on the eve of the New Year and concludes with the Lantern Festival.

This year, we welcome the Year of the Horse, a symbol of energy, freedom, and forward momentum. Individuals born in the Year of the Horse are often seen as hardworking, confident, and adventurous.

At Downstate, we are privileged to work alongside, learn from, and celebrate the richness of diversity in culture, religion, lived experiences, and so much more. Our campus is home to energized, passionate, and dedicated students, faculty, and staff whose work make positive impacts every day.

May this year inspire us to rise above challenges and embrace the many opportunities that lie ahead.

Warm wishes for a healthy and prosperous Lunar New Year!
