Governor Kathy Hochul visited SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University on June 17, 2025, to announce a transformative investment of $1 billion in capital funding aimed at revitalizing its University Hospital. This historic commitment—a blend of $750 million secured through the 2024–26 New York State budgets and additional annual allocations—will support extensive infrastructure upgrades, the transition to private patient rooms, a modernized emergency department, and the construction of a new ambulatory surgery center while preserving vital inpatient and outpatient services including maternity and kidney transplant care .
During her remarks, Governor Hochul emphasized that “Every New Yorker deserves access to innovative, high‑quality care," noting that this infusion “will lead to a brighter future for this community” by addressing longstanding mechanical and facility deficiencies and ensuring Downstate’s long‑term sustainability through community-informed planning .
SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr., lauded the investment as crucial for maintaining Downstate’s role as Brooklyn’s academic medical center. The university’s president, Dr. Wayne J. Riley, and community representatives reiterated that the funding marks a pivotal turning point—prioritizing equity, modern patient care, and the stability of essential services.
