Advanced Year Electives Distribution Requirements

20 Weeks Elective Credits

  1. No more than 12 weeks of clinical electives in any one subspecialty discipline will count towards the  elective graduation requirement.

    • The following fields are counted as subspecialties:
Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Gynecologic Oncology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Pathology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Surgery subspecialties in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, General Surgery (i.e., Surgery SubI, etc), Neurologic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery and Medical and Pediatric Subspecialties (e.g. GI, ID, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Heme-Onc, etc.).

  2. No more than 8 weeks of away (extramural) clinical electives will count towards the  graduation requirement.

  3. No more than 8 weeks of research electives will count towards the elective graduation requirement. Research elective credit only gets counted as research — it does NOT get counted toward the subspecialty or extramural maximums.

  4. No more than 4 weeks of senior credit will be granted for non-clinical (reading) based electives.

  5. Students must complete 2 weeks of an ICU course. This requirement may be taken here or at an away institution as long as you go through the proper process to receive credit. Permission must be obtained before you begin the experience. No exceptions will be made to this rule. Students request permission by contacting the Associate Dean for Student and Curricular Affairs.
  6. If you take 4 weeks of an ICU experience, 2 weeks will apply toward your elective requirements.

Please note: Students are permitted to register and take additional electives over and  the required elective requirement.

Students are strongly encouraged to use their Advanced Clinical Year of medical school to broaden their knowledge base as general physicians by taking electives in fields different than those that they will ultimately practice. Departmental suggested electives by specialty can be found here.

These requirements are subject to change.
