Additional Services for First Year Medical Students

• Gross Anatomy mock practicals are offered three times each year to medical students, prior to practical examinations.  These are set up and administered by upperclass medical student tutors.
• Group reviews in lecture subject matter are offered. Typically 90 minutes long, these sessions, meet from once per week to as little or as often as seems effective. They are conducted by second- through fourth-year medical student tutors, MD/Ph.D. student tutors, and occasionally by residents. They are designed to be interactive and to encourage group study.
• Histology lab reviews are available to students during and especially at the end of  a unit, prior to practical examinations. The frequency of reviews depends upon the frequency of occurrence of histology labs. These are given by upperclass medical and graduate student tutors to groups of approximately 20 students.
• Individual counseling in study skills, test taking and time management is available to all medical students. There are some medical students who procrastinate, do not study efficiently and/or approach learning as rote memorization.   Students who self-refer or are referred by deans, faculty or staff attend counseling sessions that pertain to learning and preparation for exams. 
• Individual tutoring is available to all medical students upon recommendation of the Associate/Assistant Director, Dean or faculty member. When a tutor is requested, an individual assessment is first made by the Associate/Assistant Director as to whether the student has academic difficulties or problems better dealt with by individual counseling. Some obstacles to academic success, which may require remediation, may not be amenable to individual tutoring.
• Medical knowledge reviews are held by upperclass tutors and attended by the Associate Director. Attending medical knowledge reviews provide Academic Services staff insight into content areas in which students are encountering difficulty.  The Associate Director will usually hold follow-up discussions of the medical knowledge review with the student and with the unit director.
