John C. La Rosa Award

Bonnet Award

Elizabeth Bonet, CNM, LM, MPH, Midwifery clinical preceptor, was the 2005 Dr. John C. LaRosa Award recipient. A 1983 Downstate graduate, Elizabeth Bonet has been the Director of the Midwifery Service at Metropolitan Hospital Center for the past 16 years. In this capacity, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to her alma mater through facilitating, supporting and promoting the clinical education of scores of Downstate midwifery students. She and her dedicated staff can be relied upon to welcome 1 - 3 midwifery students during each clinical rotation, providing them with a wealth of diverse learning opportunities. In fact, 6 of the 9 current Metropolitan Hospital staff midwives are Downstate graduates Ms. Bonet hired!

Ms. Bonet is a highly respected, masterful teacher of clinical skills, and serves as a role model and mentor for midwifery students, medical students, and ob-gyn residents, particularly those of Latino heritage.

Lynn Award

Callie Mikell, CNM, Hazel Farnum, CNM, Aleida Llanes-Oberstein, CNM, MS, and Ronnie Lichtman, CNM, PhD, congratulate Phyllis Lynn, CNM (second from left) on receiving the John La Rosa Award.

The John C. La Rosa clinical preceptor award was given to Phyllis Lynn, CNM, LM, MS, Director of the Midwifery Service at Maimonides Medical Center.

Ms. Lynn has been a staunch supporter of midwifery students for many years. Her service has been called "the finishing school of midwives." Ms. Lynn has always been a voice for cooperation between education and service, and for support of education programs. The Maimonides service has been a place where the midwifery program sends students who are having difficulty, where students can receive extra time, if needed, and where the faulty know students will receive not only a valuable educational experience, but tender loving care. In addition to her wonderful precepting work, Ms. Lynn gave the ACNM Division of accreditation Site Visitors a tour of her facility. They were "duly" impressed.
