Mission
The mission of the Health Informatics Program in the School of Health Professions is to empower future health informatics professionals with the knowledge and skills to transform healthcare through data-driven solutions, improving patient outcomes and advancing the efficiency of healthcare systems. With the support of tightly-knitted faculty members, students will have the opportunity to thrive in a professional and engaging learning environment. Well-rounded training opportunities will be provided to the students, thus allowing them to face challenges that will enhance their abilities to succeed in diverse communities.
Vision
The Health Informatics Program at Downstate Health Sciences University aims to educate future generation of forward thinking and responsive health informaticians and also strives to become a model for Informatics education.
Goals & Objectives
The mission will be accomplished by:
- Providing students the basic principles of health informatics and ensuring that they will have the ability to transfer the knowledge into a practical hands-on approach in the real world
- Keeping abreast on the ever changing health informatics field and relay any key updates to the students and faculty members
- Applying knowledge learned in a classroom to a range of clinical settings
- Providing students with realistic and challenging scenarios that necessitate a creative solution strategy
- Learning to work collaboratively in diverse professional setting
Program Learning Objectives
At the completion of the program, student should be able to:
- Apply the knowledge learned in a classroom setting to work productively with healthcare technology in various settings
- Analyze and evaluate health informatics solutions for various healthcare scenarios
- Analyze large volume of diverse health data and interpret results as part of solutions to a substantive health informatics problem
- Demonstrate competencies required for an informatics position in a healthcare organization
- Adhere to ethical and professional behavior standards and requirements set forth by healthcare institutions as well as state and federal laws
- Able to work alongside diverse work forces in both clinical and non-clinical roles in a professional setting
- Demonstrate professional level interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, and presentation)
