StudentsStudents of the Medical Informatics Association (SMIA) at Downstate is a student organization established in 2010. The purpose of this organization is to bring together students interested in Health Informatics as a field of study and to provide them with the opportunity to enhance academic and community experiences through mentorship, education, networking, and community engagement. This organization is open to the entire Downstate community.

Every semester, the student association invites guest speakers, who are leaders in the industry, to discuss the ever evolving nature of the field and how to better prepare for careers in Informatics. SMIA also organizes various information sessions to educate students and community members, as well as host community wide volunteer projects and various campus wide activities. Depending on funding, this organization aims to sponsor selected member representatives to attend national and regional professional conferences and career fairs. Members meet monthly during both Spring and Fall semesters.
