Curriculum

SUNY Downstate offers two academic pathways in Applied Behavior Analysis. Both provide coursework required for BCBA® certification and NYS licensure as a Licensed Behavior Analyst, with distinct structures depending on prior education.

Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis (42 credits, ABAI-Recognized)
The MS in ABA is designed to be completed in five semesters of full-time study. Coursework includes foundational and advanced topics in behavior analysis, such as research methods, ethics, experimental and applied analysis of behavior, verbal behavior, and organizational behavior management. Students also complete practicum training and a mentored thesis or applied project that builds professional and research skills.

Supervised fieldwork is embedded in the program and completed in real-world settings such as schools, clinics, and community agencies. Practicum placements are coordinated with affiliate partners and aligned with coursework to ensure integrated, hands-on training.

Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (27 credits, Limited-Time Program)
The Advanced Certificate is designed for students who already hold a master’s degree or higher in a related field. This program can be completed in as little as three semesters, though individualized programs of study are available to accommodate different pacing needs. Coursework covers the core content areas required for certification and licensure, including ethics, measurement, assessment, and behavior-change procedures. Unlike the MS program, the Advanced Certificate does not require completion of a thesis or applied project. Students are required to complete supervised fieldwork independently.  Enrollment in the Advanced Certificate will be available through the 2029–2030 academic year.
