Vascular Disease

Vascular disease refers to the a variety of health problems that relate to the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the different areas of your body; and return the blood from the tissues back to your heart. There are many different types of vascular disease. However, most common reason of vascular problems is due to plaque that builds up inside your blood vessels. This plaque is made of cholesterol, cells, and other chemicals, and accumulates progressively over the years. When it reaches a significant size this plaque slows down or sometimes completely blocks blood flow inside the arteries leading to serious symptoms.

Because the plaque built-up happens slowly, people may have vascular disease that does not cause any problems for many years. Lifestyle changes often help to reduce the severity of symptoms, but some people need medication or even surgery.
