Section of General Surgery
As one of the foundational pillars of our department, the General Surgery section
provides support for the Acute Care Section, and supports a trusted network of referring
healthcare providers to build a robust elective practice.
Residents who rotate at the University Hospital at Downstate operate the main UHD
campus and our Ambulatory Surgery Center at Bayridge. Trainee's experience at these
sites provides insight into the workings of various healthcare organizations and expands
the residents’ experience with a mature surgical practice.
We provide the full gamut of general surgery procedures including:
- Gallbladder surgery
 - Colectomy
 - Colostomy and Ileostomy management
 - Gastrectomy
 - Hernia repair
 - Skin and soft tissue tumors
 - Anorectal procedures
 - Surgical management of patients with IBD
 - GI endoscopy, PEG’s
 - Colonoscopies

We are very proud of our partners at the Kings County Hospital and the Richmond University
Medical Center for having developed a robust bariatric and robotic minimally invasive
programs and are in the process of developing a state of the art minimally invasive
robotic program at the University Hospital of Downstate.
