Section of Acute Care Surgery
The Section of Acute Care Surgery provides around-the-clock coverage for all Emergency
Department and the in-patient consultations. Our faculty members work in concert with
senior and junior surgical residents. Our approach to care is team oriented, maximizing
contributions from all team members in coming up with a differential diagnosis, plan
of care and adjustments based on patient reevaluation and data from the diagnostic
tools available in our state-of-the-art hospital. The variety of cases ranges the
entire spectrum of the discipline.
The most commonly treated pathologies include:
- GI bleeding
- Hepatobiliary diseases
- Abdominal pain
- Patients with sepsis
- Anorectal diseases
- Bowel obstruction
- Hernias
- Appendicitis
- Abscesses
- Airway and Vascular access
The approach for the patients requiring surgery is dictated by patients' needs, with
utilization of minimally invasive approaches when appropriate.
The University Hospital of Downstate works in partnership with our colleagues at the Kings County Hospital in management of patients requiring complex trauma care. Our program’s residents, who rotate at the Kings County Hospital, work closely with the residents at the University Hospital at Downstate to assure a seamless transfer, when appropriate, and facilitate continuity of care.
