Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

Welcome to the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) - Downstate Health Sciences University in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. Serving a population of over 2.6 million, we are Brooklyn’s only academic university radiology residency program. Our program is a 4-year ACGME-accredited diagnostic radiology program accepting approximately 8 residents per class. We also offer 2 positions in the Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) track which focuses on Interventional Radiology during the fourth year of residency training for advanced placement into an Independent IR Residency (1 year fellowship).

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University’s radiology residency program provides a broad and balanced exposure to radiology at our two core hospitals with additional IR rotations at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center (Brooklyn).

We also offer affiliated elective rotations in Pediatric Radiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as well as PET imaging and Interventional Oncology rotations at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.

Kings County Hospital, established in 1831, was designated as America’s First Level I Trauma Center and is one of the largest urban, trauma hospital centers in the United States with an annual volume of approximately 140,000 ED visits per year (7th busiest in the US)

University Hospital of Brooklyn, heads our research facilities and our medical school established in 1860. The University Hospital was the site of the first ever Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) of a human in 1977, and serves as a tertiary care center for transplant, dialysis, and cardiac patients.

Our full range of fellowship-trained attendings provide residents with well-rounded and rigorous training in a supportive and collegial environment. Our curriculum and rotation schedule expose residents through the full complement of rotations and curriculum during the first three years, directed specifically towards fulfilling all the core competencies prior to their taking the ABR Core Examination. The fourth year has been restructured to offer residents the option of doing several focused mini fellowships and/or advanced rotations.

Please use this website as an overview of our program and contact information is available for any further inquiries. Thank you for visiting our website and good luck in your pursuit of a career in radiology.
