Role and Mission Statement

The SUNY Downstate Radiation Oncology Residency Program has the mission to train its residents to become fully independent board-certified radiation oncologists who practice with a deep care and compassion for each patient.  Our primary form training is experiential learning, with level-based progressive clinical responsibilities under the tutelage of faculty who provide context and meaning to each case at hand.   We value research as an important component of our program.  By the end of training, our residents should be prepared to take ABR boards and practice confidently at the level expected of a new graduate.

General Overview

Residents rotate clinically in the Departments of Radiation Oncology at the three (3) main clinical sites with the majority of their time spent at the primary site, defined as over 24 months through residency training. Additionally, there are rotational months (e.g. Pediatrics, CNS, Brachytherapy) at MSKCC whereby resident may obtain additional cases . Over the course of residency, 6 months are allocated for research and/or electives, 3 of which are to be performed at one of our main clinical sites.
