Disaster Medicine Fellowship

The Disaster Preparedness Fellowship at SUNY Downstate is one of the most unique post-graduate academic programs in the field of emergency preparedness, offering fundamental training in disaster management, opportunities in disaster research and clinical work, and training in the public health aspects of emergency preparedness. The fellowship also provides an opportunity to complete the SUNY Downstate Masters in Public Health program during the 2 year program

Each fellow spends 16-20 hours per week at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Bureau of Communicable Disease as part of the Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Program (HEPP). The fellow works closely with the director and senior coordinator in developing their own research interests and applying them to various research projects. The fellow is also exposed to a range of training experiences in management of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive emergencies, as well as disease surveillance and response.

Past Fellows

Raj Mittal, MD, MB

Dr. Mittal completed his residency in pediatrics at The Brooklyn Hospital Center and is now the director of the Disaster Preparedness Fellowship. While a disaster preparedness fellow himself, he completed extensive research at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene examining various aspects of preparedness for radiation emergencies.

 

Mollie Williams, MD MP

Dr. Williams completed her residency in emergency medicine at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. She was the lead investigator in an ongoing research project in cooperation with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene looking at New York City's ability to evacuate critically ill patients during a costal storm surge. The project also examined the key factors involved in making the decision to evacuate patients or to "shelter in place". She completed a Masters in Public Health Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Cente

Christiana Campbell, MD MPH

Dr. Campbell completed her pediatric residency in emergency medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She was the lead investigator in an ongoing research project in pediatric critical care assessments with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She completed a Masters in Public Health Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University.
