Scholarly Oversight Committee

The Department of Anesthesiology at SUNY Downstate is committed to supporting scholarly activity with active participation of the residents. Scholarly activity includes, but is not limited to writing chapters, clinical reports, chart reviews, quality improvement projects, and randomized prospective trials. Annually, several basic science and clinical research projects are open to participation from residents. Additionally, residents are encouraged to propose research ideas which may then be developed into research studies. Both, ongoing research activity and new projects are discussed at the quarterly Scholarly Oversight Committee (SOC) meetings, which serve advisory and oversight roles. Attending anesthesiologists are always available to help residents as mentors and active partners in research.

Research activities in the Department may be performed in two areas, clinical and laboratory. Clinical research is overseen by Drs. Ketan Shevde and John Hartung. Several experienced attending anesthesiologists are currently involved in clinical research. Laboratory research is conducted under the able directorship of Dr. Ira Kass, who works closely with Dr. Ming Zhang. Together they bring years of experience and funded research in neuro and cardiac areas.
