Appointment Renewals

Maintaining Faculty Appointments Through Timely Renewal

Certain faculty appointments are made for a defined period and require periodic review and renewal. The appointment renewal process helps ensure that faculty appointments remain current, accurately reflect departmental needs, and continue to support the College of Medicine's educational, research, clinical, and service missions.

Renewal does not occur automatically. Departments should initiate renewal requests sufficiently in advance of the appointment expiration date to allow adequate time for review and approval. Term appointments may be renewed or changed through the appropriate institutional process, while notice and review rights related to non-renewal are governed by applicable policies and the UUP Agreement.

When Is a Renewal Required?

Renewal may be required for appointment categories that are approved for a specified term.

Examples include:

  • Term appointments
  • Temporary appointments, when continuation is appropriate
  • Voluntary faculty appointments
  • Affiliate appointments, where applicable
  • Other time-limited appointments

The applicable appointment letter and institutional policies determine the duration of each appointment.

Voluntary Faculty Renewal

Voluntary faculty appointments follow a standardized institutional reappointment cycle.

Departmental rosters are provided to Department Chairs for review.  Chairs identify voluntary faculty members who continue to maintain an active academic relationship with the College and are in good standing, and submit the completed roster to the Dean's Office for review and signature. The standardized reappointment cycle runs from September 1 through August 31
