Academic Appointments
Establishing the Foundation of an Academic Career
An academic appointment establishes the official relationship between a faculty member and the College of Medicine. Every appointment reflects the faculty member's academic role, responsibilities, qualifications, and anticipated contributions to the University's missions of education, research, clinical care, scholarship, and service.
The Office of Faculty Affairs partners with academic departments throughout the appointment process to ensure appointments are made in accordance with University policies, College of Medicine procedures, and applicable SUNY requirements.
The policies and procedures governing the terms and conditions of employment for academic employees are subject to the rules and regulations set forth in the PDF of the State University of New York Policies of the Board of Trustees.
Academic Responsibilities
Faculty appointments support one or more areas of the University's academic mission.
Responsibilities may include:
Education
Teaching medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, and other learners.
Research & Scholarship
Conducting research, publishing scholarly work, obtaining external funding, and contributing to scientific discovery.
Clinical Care
Providing patient care while supporting the educational mission of the College.
Academic Administration
Serving in administrative leadership roles and supporting departmental operations.

Appointment Authority
Faculty appointments are made through established institutional processes and in accordance with applicable University policies.
Academic departments initiate appointment recommendations based upon departmental needs and faculty qualifications. Appointment requests are reviewed by the appropriate administrative offices and, where required, undergo additional review before final institutional approval.
Faculty Affairs assists in this process by reviewing documentation, facilitating institutional approvals, and ensuring compliance with University and College of Medicine requirements.
