Nira Goldstein M.D. MPH Resident Research Award


The Nira A. Goldstein, M.D., MPH Resident Research Award is established to honor Dr. Goldstein’s service to the SUNY Downstate Department of Otolaryngology.  Dr. Goldstein joined the Department of Otolaryngology in 1998 as a full-time pediatric otolaryngologist in the division.  After 27 years of service, she will retire from the faculty on June 30, 2025.

A graduate of Yale University where she earned her BS, Dr. Goldstein went on to the New York University School of Medicine for her M.D. where she also completed her Otolaryngology Residency. Dr. Goldstein completed her fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh where she also served as the Hamburg Research Fellow. She received her Master of Public Health degree at SUNY Downstate in May 2010 receiving the Roy Milner Seideman, M.D. Award for Academic Excellence. She currently holds the rank of Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology.

Dr. Goldstein has held numerous leadership roles in the department including serving as the chair of clinical research, director of the medical student clerkship, associate program director and since 2022, residency program director.  Within the Downstate College of Medicine, Dr. Goldstein has served in many roles including as a clinical advisory dean, member of the committee on academic promotions and qualifications (CAPQ-which she chaired for one year), Chair of the REDCap Steering Committee and has been a member of numerous GME committees. Her skills as a teacher in the school of medicine are widely acknowledged, helping to attract interest in otolaryngology among the best and brightest Downstate medical students.

Nationally, Dr. Goldstein  is a member of the Triologic Society where her thesis-“Validation of a Clinical Assessment Score for Pediatric Sleep-Disordered Breathing” was recognized with the Harris P. Mosher Award. She has been a PI on nine grants. She is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAOHNS) and the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) where she has participated on committees, and as a program chair for national meetings (ASPO).

Dr. Goldstein has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles and 25 textbook chapters that focus on her clinical and research interests including pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, otitis media and congenital hearing loss- topics on which she has been invited to lecture nationally.  She serves on the editorial board of the Laryngoscope and the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. 

Dr. Goldstein’s dedication to research as a scholar and mentor to many residents, medical students and colleagues has made her a leader at Downstate and nationally within the field of otolaryngology. Her dedication to teaching is recognized by the high esteem with which she is held by the many residents she has trained, winning the Otolaryngology teaching award four times. Dr. Goldstein’s legacy of clinical research will be celebrated with this new award to an outstanding resident to continue to encourage excellence in research among the otolaryngology housestaff.
