Honoring the Doctors Who Keep Brooklyn Healthy

By Office of the President | May 19, 2026

Moro Salifu, MD, MBA, MPH, MACP

Congratulations to Moro O. Salifu, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP, Chair of Medicine, for his recognition at the 2026 Doctors’ Day Celebration hosted by the Medical Society of the County of Kings (MSCK), the Academy of Medicine of Brooklyn, and the Richmond County Medical Society.

The annual celebration recognizes physicians whose leadership, service, and dedication continue to strengthen healthcare throughout Brooklyn and Staten Island. In announcing the honor, MSCK leadership recognized Brooklyn physicians for their leadership, innovation, and dedication to patient care, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Downstate, that mission carries special significance. More than 30 percent of New York State’s physicians in the tri-state region have trained at Downstate’s College of Medicine, underscoring the institution’s longstanding role in preparing the state’s healthcare workforce.

This year’s Match Day further reaffirmed a commitment to Brooklyn and New York City communities, with 76 percent of graduating medical students remaining in New York State for residency training, including 107 graduates staying in New York City and 35 continuing their training at Downstate.

Dr. Salifu is a nationally and internationally respected nephrologist, educator, researcher, and academic leader who has served Downstate for more than two decades. He is the Edwin C. and Anne K. Weiskopf Endowed Chair in Nephrology and Transplantation and has earned broad recognition for his contributions to medicine, research, mentorship, and healthcare leadership.

A leading investigator in vascular biology, chronic kidney disease progression, and kidney transplantation outcomes, Dr. Salifu has led major NIH-funded research initiatives, including efforts supporting the Brooklyn Health Disparities Center and community-engaged research focused on reducing health inequities. His scientific work has contributed to discoveries involving peptide inhibitors of the F11 receptor with potential therapeutic applications in thrombosis, atherosclerosis, pulmonary hypertension, and dialysis vascular access dysfunction.

Dr. Salifu is widely recognized for his leadership in academic medicine and physician education. He currently serves as Governor of the American College of Physicians for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island and has received numerous honors throughout his career recognizing his excellence in patient care, teaching, scholarship, and service.

Doctors’ Day serves as a reminder of the profound impact physicians have on the health and well-being of communities across Brooklyn, New York City, and beyond. Downstate remains proud to educate and support physicians whose work continues to shape the future of medicine, research, and patient care.

Congratulations, Dr. Salifu.
