By Office of the President | Mar 17, 2026

photo of Thomas E. Wallach, M.D.Downstate recently joined other leading pediatric researchers from around the world in a global forum focused on the future of children’s health. At the Paediatric Research for the Future of Children Global Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, Thomas E. Wallach, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Fellowship Director in Pediatric Gastroenterology, presented new research examining the benefits of GLP-1 therapies in pediatric mental health.

Dr. Wallach and his collaborators had two research posters accepted for presentation. They delivered a podium talk that placed Downstate’s work alongside that of leading pediatric investigators from major academic medical centers and international research organizations.

Pediatric scientists were brought together from across North America, Europe, and Asia to explore emerging questions that will shape the future of pediatric medicine. The forum convened approximately 300 investigators for focused discussion on child health, development, and scientific discovery.

Dr. Wallach’s presentation followed remarks from several internationally recognized pediatric medicine leaders. Among them was Wendy Chung, M.D., Ph.D., Pediatrician-in-Chief at Boston Children’s Hospital and a leader in genomic medicine and pediatric research, and Diana W. Bianchi, renowned medical geneticist and neonatologist, and former Director of NICHD. The session also featured Scott Hadland, M.D., MPH, a pediatrician and researcher known for his work on adolescent health and substance use prevention.

For Downstate, participation in this global forum reflected the growing reach of our research community and the role our faculty play in advancing scientific understanding of child health. Dr. Wallach’s work contributes to ongoing international efforts to explore how emerging therapies may influence pediatric mental health and long-term health outcomes.

Congratulations, Dr. Wallach, and thank you for representing Downstate at this critical global forum and on contributing to research that advances the health and well-being of children everywhere.
