Congratulations to Camille A. Clare, M.D., MPH, CPE, FACOG, Downstate’s Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, who received the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society Outstanding Leadership Award for her years of commitment and dedication to the people, to the community, and past, present, and future women physicians.

The Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society (SMSS) serves as the local branch of the National Medical Association and is dedicated to representing Black women in medicine. Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Steward was the first Black woman to matriculate into medical school in New York at New York Medical College; she practiced prenatal care and care of childhood diseases in Brooklyn for the majority of her career.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of SSMS by the late Dr. Muriel Petioni, affectionately referred to in the Harlem community as the “Mother of Medicine.” The event honored Black women physicians for their achievements as trailblazers, leaders, activists, and humanitarians.
