By Office of the President | Feb 20, 2024

School of Public Health BuildingSUNY Downstate’s School of Public Health (SPH) earned reaccreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). SPH successfully met 100 percent of CEPH’s criteria and was granted reaccreditation for a full seven-year term, the maximum duration allowed by the CEPH Board of Councilors for schools of public health. CEPH, an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, is responsible for accrediting public health schools and programs outside of schools of public health. The School of Public Health consists of the Departments of Health Policy and Management, Community Health Sciences, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. As of winter 2023, the school enrolled over 450 students in both Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health programs. The school welcomed its inaugural cohort of students in the Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) in fall 2023, a program that students in the M.D. program can pursue concurrently.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication and excellence of the hard work of the SPH Dean Kitaw Demissie, M.D., Ph,D., its students, faculty, and staff. Achieving 100 percent of CEPH’s criteria and receiving the maximum reaccreditation term reflects the significant work and commitment to high standards in education, research, and community service.

I extend heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the rigorous site review process. Their diligent efforts have ensured that our programs continue to meet the highest quality standards, preparing future public health leaders to make a meaningful impact in communities locally and globally.

To all students, faculty, staff, alums, and partners who have contributed to this success, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your unwavering support and collaboration make the SPH a standard-bearer of excellence in public health education and advocacy. Together, we look forward to continuing our mission of improving health and well-being for all.

Downstate’s SPH has held CEPH accreditation since 2005. The full CEPH accreditation report can be accessed here.
