Aiming for a Successful Year Anchored in Diversity and Inclusion

By Office of the President | Oct 17, 2023

We find ourselves at the semester midpoint, and I hope you have all settled in comfortably. Whether you embarked on journeys, connected with colleagues, delved into field research, cherished moments with loved ones, or devoted time to your professional growth, we anticipate a year filled with accomplishments and success within our vibrant Downstate community.

New beginnings, especially within our institution, mark significant transitions. Our campus takes immense pride in embracing our exceptionally diverse community, where all voices, perspectives, and backgrounds are recognized, honored, and celebrated. At times like this, we highlight what makes us exceptional, reinforcing our pride while warmly welcoming this diversity that contributes to an inclusive and thriving learning environment.

Considering the many challenges we have faced in the last few years–from the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic–to the persistence of various social ills such as hatred, bigotry, racism, and more, we must recognize our collective role as leaders in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. Finding common ground, treating each other with respect and compassion, and striving for a better, more unified world are essential tasks for us as educators and healthcare professionals.

This responsibility is significant, and we have pledged to rise above the negativity and move towards a world characterized by care, empathy, and compassion. Our dedication to this cause will be the driving force behind our success.

We stand against all acts of violence domestically and internationally. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and University Hospital at Downstate are places of learning and lifesaving, where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together, work side-by-side, build lifelong friendships, share meals, and contribute to saving lives.

This message expresses hope for a successful and productive remainder of the year, emphasizing and embracing diversity in an inclusive learning environment. As a campus community, let us remember why we chose to be part of Downstate–to make a difference.

It is time to reaffirm our commitment to this goal and each other.

I extend my heartfelt wishes for peace and understanding to all.
