Medical Students Present at National Kidney Foundation Meeting

Downstate students presented at the National Kidney Foundation’s Spring Clinical Meetings in Texas, where health professionals gathered to learn new developments related to all aspects of nephrology.

Six COM ’25 students presented abstracts of their work: Dua Abedeen, Association of Financial Stressors with Medication Non-Adherence in Inner-City Patients with ESKD, Joya AhmadOb-Gyn Care, Reproductive Health Education and Lack of Knowledge in Inner-City Patients with Kidney Disease; Juanita Gomez, Patterns of Engagement with Primary Care Services in Patients with ESKD; Claire Peabody, COVID Vaccine Hesitancy and Health Locus of Control in Inner-City Patients with Kidney Disease,  Alice Varghese, Whole Body Phase Angle and Body Composition and Relationship to Frailty in Kidney Transplant Recipients (KTRs), and Bethany Williams, Association Between Spirituality and Beliefs in Medicine in a Population of Inner-City Patients with CKD/ESKD.

They are rising second-year students who participated in the summer research program focused on health disparities and social determinants of health among patients with chronic kidney disease. The program is mentored by Mariana Markell, M.D., Professor and Medical Director of Kidney Transplant, and funded in part by the College of Medicine Alumni Association.
