SUNY Open Access Repository Allows Greater Access to Researchers’ Publications

By Office of The President | Apr 17, 2023

The Downstate Medical Research Library of Brooklyn has created an open-access collection of Downstate research in SUNY’s Open Access Repository (SOAR), allowing our researchers to freely share their publications with the broader community and raise the visibility of our institution. Downstate’s repository is part of and is supported by SUNY’s ongoing dedication to advance access to scholarly and creative works.

In 2018, the SUNY Chancellor issued a memorandum charging all SUNY campuses with the development of an Open Access (OA) policy and a scholarly repository to store any works created under open access. Downstate adopted the policy in 2020.

Downstate Library has apportioned its section of SOAR to collect the institution’s research into one aggregate area. We currently have over 1300 research articles posted in SOAR and submisions continue regularly.

SUNY Open Access Repository (SOAR) is a long-term archive managed by SUNY. It is indexed by Google, making its contents easily searchable and retrievable globally. By making our body of research freely available to users worldwide, we raise the visibility and reputation of our institution and our work.

Submitting work to an institutional repository is relatively common today and is supported by many journals and publishers.

  • Eighty percent (80%) of journals allow deposits in institutional repositories.
  • All embargo periods and publisher agreements are followed when work is submitted.
  • Usage/view statistics are recorded for each item.
  • Items submitted have a permanent URL to use for CVs or references.
  • A representative body of work for researchers, departments, and the institution in one location.
  • Studies have found repository submission can increase citation rates - even if originally published in an OA journal.

Those publishing are encouraged to submit copies of their work to the Downstate repository. If you have published recently or have any questions regarding submitting to SOAR, visit libguide, or email Gregg Headrick gregg.headrick@downstate.edu to see if your work is eligible for inclusion.
