Dr. Brian McNeil Named as a 2023 Presidential Leadership Scholar

By Office of the President | Jan 23, 2023

placeholderJoin me in congratulating Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs & Associate Professor Brian McNeil, MD, MBA, FACS, named one of 60 Presidential Leadership Scholars (PLS). This six-month program assembles a diverse network of leaders who collaborate and work toward meaningful change in the United States and globally while learning about leadership through the lens of former presidents' experiences of George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Lyndon B. Johnson, and members of their respective administrations.

PLS draws on the strengths and leadership initiatives of the four affiliated presidential centers, creating a rare opportunity to instill principled leadership transcending diverse backgrounds while fostering opportunities for leaders to emerge with ready solutions to persistent national problems.

Scholars are selected for their leadership growth potential and the strength of their leadership projects aimed at improving the civic or social good.

Dr. McNeil will develop his initiative, Urology 205, a multi-pronged strategy to address healthcare disparities in the urology field. The goal is to increase awareness of urologic ailments in underserved populations through strategic partnerships, create parameters to be adopted nationwide by practicing urologists to serve communities at risk better, and organize and refine pipeline programs to attract talented students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in urology and other surgical subspecialties.

Scholars will travel to each presidential center to learn from former presidents, key former administration officials, business and civic leaders, and leading academics to assess varying leadership principles and exchange ideas to help maximize their impact in the communities they serve.

Dr. McNeil earned a BS in Biology from Morehouse College in Atlanta and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at Loyola University Medical Center, a clinical fellowship in urologic-oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center following research fellowships at the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute and James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. McNeil also holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Dr. McNeil is widely published, an ardent voice on the importance of diversity and inclusion in healthcare, and a vocal advocate for addressing and correcting healthcare disparities in underserved and under-resourced communities—often international in scope.
