The Global Center for AI, Society, and Mental Health

Pioneering and deploying innovative AI solutions to address the mental health challenges of underserved communities worldwide.

The Global Center for AI, Society, and Mental Health (GCAISMH) is dedicated to pioneering and deploying innovative AI solutions to tackle the mental health challenges faced by underserved communities.

The Center was established through seed funding from SUNY as part of the statewide SUNY STRIVE Artificial Intelligence Strategic Plan. This funding strengthened its recognition and capacity for impactful initiatives, and positioned GCAISMH as a key member of the Innovative Network for SUNY’s Pioneering AI Research and Excellence (INSPIRE) Center. This overarching entity brings together the capabilities and expertise across SUNY campuses to scale AI research, training and collaboration.

The GCAISMH offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the rapidly evolving field of AI in mental health and make a meaningful impact on those who need it most.

Our Center’s Mission and Vision:

Mission: Pioneering innovative AI solutions to the pressing mental health epidemic via an interdisciplinary, cross-sector approach, with a focus on critically underserved communities worldwide.

Vision: Establishing the first global laboratory of its kind to advance mental health care among underserved communities worldwide. More than just a technology lab, this is a powerful collaboration among leaders in mental health, health equity, AI, and community engagement. The Center will serve as a nexus, bringing community organizations, industry leaders, health researchers, and community members into one collaborative space that aims to ensure equitable, globally beneficial solutions in this emerging and rapidly changing field.

Who we are:

The GCAISMH was established by the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University, the University at Albany (UAlbany), and the Health Innovation Exchange (HIEx). The center leverages:

1) Downstate’s expertise in clinical and translational research, public health and equity, and access to a diverse and underserved population;

2) UAlbany’s AI resources, which include advanced AI supercomputing resources from NVIDIA and IBM, and a recent cluster hire of 27 faculty members with diverse AI expertise;

3) HIEx's expertise in supporting innovation ecosystems, providing access to a global network of innovators, investors, policymakers and communities to deliver effective solutions for improved healthcare (HIEx was co-founded by Mr. Kakkattil, former Director of the UNAIDS Office of Innovation and Partnership).

Partners:

Designed for impact, the GCAISMH has actively forged a network of partnerships with industry and tech leaders, academic institutions, government agencies and humanitarian organizations (see Organigram above). This network will enable access to multimodal data to train AI, foster equity and diversity in workforce development, provide critical domain knowledge expertise, support deployment in underserved communities, and bolster fundraising efforts. The center has already signed agreements, such as a Letter of Intent for Collaboration or a Memorandum of Understanding, or established collaboration with the following partners:

● Tech / AI: Google, IBM, NVIDIA, Microsoft AI for Health, Fujitsu AI Center of Excellence.

● Humanitarian Organizations: Red Cross, Team Rubicon, HEART 9/11.
