New Medical Leadership at SUNY Downstate
Oct 14, 2011
New medical leadership has been elected at SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s University
Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB). M. William Atallah, MD, has been elected president of
the medical and dental staff, and Victor Masi, DO, has been elected secretary and
treasurer. Dr. Atallah and Dr. Masi represent the medical staff at all three University
Hospital locations: Central Brooklyn, UHB at Long Island College Hospital (LICH),
and SUNY Downstate at Bay Ridge.
Dr. Atallah, a board-certified urologist with practices in Brooklyn Heights and Bay
Ridge, is also a clinical associate professor of urology at SUNY Downstate and the
director of the New York Stone Center. He has chaired LICH’s Operating Room Committee
since 2004. Dr. Atallah has been a teacher and mentor to countless students and medical
residents throughout his 30-year career. Dr. Masi is a community-based internist with
a focus on geriatric medicine and preventive care.
Debra Carey, chief executive officer of University Hospital of Brooklyn, said, “The
new medical leadership at Downstate combines the best of academic and community medicine.
I would also like to thank Stanley Fisher, MD, past president of the University Hospital
Medical-Executive Committee and chairman of pediatrics, and John Romanelli, MD, past
president of the LICH Medical Board, for their invaluable contributions as we blended
our hospitals.”
“Downstate provides the vital services we need in a changing healthcare landscape,”
continued Ms. Carey. “Our medical staff and employees look forward to continuing to
serve our community with high-quality, patient-centered care.”
The recent merger of SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Long Island College Hospital
has brought together the expertise of over 1,400 physicians. With three locations,
Downstate now has one of the broadest reaches of any health facility in the borough.
