SECOND “DINE & LEARN HEALTHY WOMEN SYMPOSIUM” NOV 9th

Oct 4, 2007

Downstate and Partners to Provide Health Talks, Screenings and Dinner

To help women make healthy choices, SUNY Downstate Medical Center has partnered with The Brooklyn Tabernacle Medical and Women Ministries to present the second “Dine & Learn Healthy Women Symposium” to educate them on various health issues vital to their physical wellbeing. Other partners include the American Cancer Society (Brooklyn), Diaspora Community Services, and the Center for Women’s Development at Medgar Evers College/CUNY.

The symposium will be held on Friday, November 9, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at The Brooklyn Tabernacle, 17 Smith Street, in Downtown Brooklyn. Because seating is limited, women should register by calling 718-270-7350. Directions are available at the church website, http://www.brooklyntabernacle.org/visitors.cfm.

SUNY Downstate health professionals will provide valuable information on such topics as heart disease, diabetes, gynecological disease, HIV/AIDS, organ donation, and preventive medicine. Free health screenings at the event will include blood pressure, rapid HIV (results in 20 minutes), and vision, and free flu shots will be available.

"It is my hope that this event will empower women, where every hungry mind is fed with the latest health information until prevention is what the attendees crave and treatment is their last desire," says event organizer Karen Jemmott, physician outreach director at SUNY Downstate,

At the evening symposium, women will have networking opportunities, allowing them to seek the expertise of many community organizations. More than 70 exhibitors and presenters will be on hand to offer women health information and support services. The goal is to address women’s needs in the areas of education/career development, fashion, fitness and weight loss, nutrition, finance, senior services, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, managed care, skin, hair, and dental care, and women’s empowerment. Attendees will receive Through the Grapevine: A Health Women Resource Guide, a tool to provide them with information about accessing physicians, services, and resources in the community.

Earlier in the day, the Brooklyn Healthy Living Partnership will offer free breast, pap, and colon exams and mammograms from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to women who qualify and have registered: women interested in this daytime service should call 718-290-2059.
