Future Healthcare Leaders Get a Hands-On Look at Anatomy

Downstate recently welcomed students from The Bronx High School of Science for a special Anatomy Education Outreach Program, offering an immersive introduction to human anatomy and the many educational pathways leading to careers in medicine, nursing, physical therapy, research, and the health professions. A longstanding Downstate initiative, the program introduces aspiring healthcare professionals to medical education through hands-on experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire future careers.

Hosted by Samuel Márquez, Ph.D., Professor of Cell Biology and Founder of the Anatomy Education Outreach Program, the visit was inspired by Tymon Krzywinski (COM ‘28), a proud Bronx Science alumnus who wanted current students to experience a medical school gross anatomy laboratory.

Sean Brewer, a second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student in the School of Health Professions and fellow Bronx Science graduate, served as a student mentor, sharing his journey to Downstate and demonstrating the many career pathways available in the health professions. They proudly showcased Downstate’s collaborative, interprofessional approach to healthcare education.

Sean and Tymon were joined by College of Medicine Summer Anatomy Teaching Assistants Klaudia Tabor, Abigail Yuhan, Abdulla Bhalli, Khandaker Hasnain, Tony Chen, Antonio Peralta-Avila, Gisselle Benavides, MD Haque, and Diener Noel Caceres, who guided students through interactive learning stations featuring the heart, lungs, brain, thorax, and musculoskeletal system. Students explored real anatomical specimens while gaining a firsthand look at the foundational science that prepares future healthcare professionals.

The visit concluded on a full-circle note as Dr. Márquez, also a Bronx Science alumnus, reflected on how his own experience at the school helped shape his journey to becoming Director of Anatomy at Downstate. His story underscored the program’s mission: to open doors, ignite curiosity, and strengthen the pipeline of future physicians, scientists, and health professionals dedicated to improving the health of their communities.
