Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
By Office of Communications & Marketing | Sep 15, 2025
As New Yorkers, our pride in diversity runs deep. This month, we joyfully celebrate
the Hispanic community whose heart and heritage enliven every borough, and our SUNY
Downstate family. Nearly 30 percent of our city identifies as Hispanic; their traditions,
leadership, and creativity shape the rhythms and flavors of New York and reflect the
values we cherish: family, service, and resilience.
In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the achievements of Hispanic American leaders, including our colleagues here at Downstate. We are proud to spotlight Adrian Aurrecoechea, MD, MPH, the proud son of Cuban and Dominican parents, who was raised in Miami. Dr. Aurrecochea is also proud of his Senegalese roots. One of the first physicians in his family and the first to specialize in emergency medicine and health equity, he has devoted his career to serving immigrant, Caribbean, and Latin communities.
As Downstate’s Director of Innovation and Health Equity, Dr. Aurrecochea embodies the strength and possibility we celebrate this month, develops patient-centered solutions that reach beyond hospital walls, addressing social needs, improving access, and creating healthier futures.
Whether collaborating with colleagues in the ER, advancing equity strategies across Brooklyn, or finding balance in Prospect Park, he brings culture, compassion, and teamwork to everything he does. His journey reminds us that heritage is not only where we come from—it’s how we help build a stronger, healthier, and more united future.
We celebrate Hispanic and Latino students, faculty, and staff. Your dedication, scholarship, and care strengthen Downstate and the communities we serve.
