The NYS Commissioner of Health declared influenza is prevalent in our state. This action activates a public health law that requires personnel in all healthcare facilities who are not vaccinated against influenza for the current influenza season, to wear a surgical or procedural mask while in areas where there may be patients. This means most areas of the hospital, including the cafeteria. This requirement will remain in effect until the commissioner declares influenza is no longer prevalent.

Hospital Administration and the Infection Control Office reminds everyone engaged in activities where there may be patients to comply with these requirements. Masks will be available in all clinical areas. Also, for clarification, patients and visitors are not required to wear masks.

As a reminder, if you have not already been vaccinated, you can receive the influenza vaccine at the Outpatient Pharmacy @ University Hospital at Downstate (470A Clarkson Avenue – bring insurance card, no copay for the flu vaccine).
