
Francesco M. Serafini, MD, FACS

Dr. Francesco Serafini is the Director of Surgical Oncology at Kings County Hospital Center and South Brooklyn Hospital Center, formerly Coney Island Hospital, and works as an attending Surgeon at University Hospital of Brooklyn. Dr. Serafini has completed a General Surgery residency training program at the University of South Florida (1994-1999) and has completed an Advanced Gastro-Intestinal Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of South Florida (Tampa General Hospital, and Moffitt Cancer Center) (1999-2001).
Dr Serafini has been a member of the Society Surgical Oncology, Society of Pancreas Club, Brooklyn Surgical Society, New York Surgical Society, and of the American College of Surgeon. Dr Serafini is an experienced cancer surgeon with keen interest in liver surgery, pancreatic surgery, gallbladder cancer surgery and advanced gastrointestinal cancers, and including premalignant functional disorders of the esophagus (GERD, Achalasia, Diverticuali of esophagus).
Dr Serafini is licensed in three Countries including United States of America, United Kingdom, and Italy). At completion of his training, Dr. Serafini returned to Europe where he worked in the UK as an Upper GI Consultant Surgeon (2001-2002), and subsequently in Italy at the Cancer Center of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (2003-2010). He was recruited by the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2010 to lead the Surgical Oncology Program at the New York Harbor VA Hospitals (Brooklyn VA and Manhattan VA) (2010-2012), and subsequently by the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (NYCHHC) as the Director of Surgical Oncology at Kings County Hospital Center and South Brooklyn Hospital Center (2012-Current). He established a successful surgical oncology practice for patients of New York focusing on the care of complex surgical oncology conditions and promoting these sites as the referral center for liver and pancreatic surgery for the Southern NYCHHC Hospitals.
Dr Serafini joined the faculty of SUNY Downstate in 2012, where he has worked in the capacity of attending surgeon and surgical oncologist since. Dr Serafini focuses on Minimally Invasive treatments of complex gastro-intestinal malignancies (liver, pancreas, biliary, esophageal, gastric, duodenal) with application of Robotic Surgery. Dr Serafini performs routinely complex gastrointestinal operations with the use of Robotic platform. Dr. Serafini has authored multiple publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals, has authored book chapters, and has given numerous lectures and proctored many surgeons and general surgery residents in surgical oncology and the application of robotic technology to surgery.
