Dr. Francesco Maria Serafini, Director of Surgical Oncology at Kings County Hospital Center, received his medical education at the University of L’Aquila, Italy in 1992. Subsequently, he completed his general surgical residency at the University of South Florida Hospital and the Moffitt Cancer Center in 1999 under the direction of Drs. Larry C. Carey and Richard C. Karl. In 2001, Dr. Serafini completed a two-year prestigious fellowship program in Advanced GI Surgical Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of South Florida Hospital and Tampa General Hospital under the direction of Dr. Alexander S. Rosemurgy.
After completion of colorectal fellowship training, he returned to Europe and in 2002 was appointed UGI Consultant Surgeon within the system of the University of Manchester Hospitals - NHS Trust.
Subsequently, from 2003 throughout 2009, Dr. Serafini returned to Italy and worked as HPB Division Chief and also as Chief of Surgery at a major academic hospital (Universita’ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Campobasso, Italy) and a metropolitan hospital (Clinica Mediterranea, Naples, Italy).
In 2010, Dr. Serafini was sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs to return to the US, to be one of the leading physicians of the Surgical Oncology program of the VANY Harbor Heath Care System at the Brooklyn and Manhattan campus.
In 2012, Dr. Serafini was recruited by the New York City Hospitals and Health Corporation - Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) and by SUNY Downstate and has been serving since as the Director of Surgical Oncology at KCHC. Since 2012 to present, Dr. Serafini has also been serving as the SUNY Downstate MDC - Liaison Physician of the Commission in Cancer sponsored by the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Serafini is boarded in both General Surgery. He has published more than 30 scientific articles in national and international peer review journals and has delivered countless invited lectureships in national and international meetings. Dr. Serafini performs the entire spectrum of complicated gastrointestinal and hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgical operations including minimally invasive surgery for gastro-esophageal, liver and pancreatic cancers, and benign conditions as well. Dr Serafini?s results are outstanding compared to the national standards. Dr. Serafini also treats retroperitoneal sarcomas and patients with peritoneal cancers (pseudomyxoma, mesothelioma, peritoneal carcinomatosis).
Dr. Serafini offers a full continuum of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for conditions including:
- Esophageal and gastric cancers, and other gastric tumors (neuroendocrine tumors, GIST)
- Liver cancers, including primary and metastatic
- Biliary cancers, including cholangiocarcinoams and gallbladder cancers
- Pancreatic cancers and other pancreatic neoplasms (IPMN, mucinous tumors, Neuroendocrine tumors)
- Retroperitoneal Sarcomas and limb sarcomas
- Retroperitoneal Sarcomas and limb sarcomas
- Functional disorders of the esophagus (GERD, Achalasia, esophageal diverticuli)
- Surgical management of pancreatic and liver cancers cancer (minimally invasive procedures)
- Minimally invasive gastric surgery (GIST tumors)
- Surgical Management of functional disorders of the esophagus
- Complex GI conditions requiring tertiary surgical care
