Jacquelyn L. Meyers, PhD

Dr. Jacquelyn Meyers has been contributing to research in the field of psychiatric genomics since 2007, when she began her predoctoral fellowship at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University. After receiving her doctoral degree in Human and Molecular Genetics, Dr. Meyers joined Columbia University’s Department of Epidemiology as a dual post-doctoral fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Substance Use Disorder Epidemiology, two highly competitive NIH training programs. In 2015, she received a mentored research scientist award (K01DA037914) through NIDA, to study the genetic and environmental influences on cannabis use and disorders, and accepted a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Since that time, she has completed her K01 work, been the recipient of the NARSAD Early Investigator Award, and co-I on several grants. She currently serves as PI or MPI on five R01 grants from the NIAAA, NIDA, and NIMH. Making her one of the <1.4% of researchers holding 5+ grants, and the only faculty member to achieve this status at SUNY Downstate. In addition, she has been a part of >200 publications in high-impact journals (Molecular Psychiatry, JAACAP), as highlighted in her CV. Her work has been recognized with the 2019 Research Society on Alcoholism’s Young Investigator Award and by the JAACAP for the Editor’s Best Paper of 2019. In her current faculty position at the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University, she works on high impact research at the intersection of genomics, neuroscience, social epidemiology, and psychiatry. More specifically, Dr. Meyers’ current research spans the genomic and neurodevelopmental influences on alcohol use disorders, substance use disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) across several large and diverse datasets. In addition to this work, she co-leads the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA)’s Brain Function project, a national U10 study of individuals at high-risk for alcohol use disorders, one of the NIAAA’s longest running research programs. She also has leadership roles in several collaborative national and international research projects at the intersection of addiction and genomics, including the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (co-leader of the PTSD-SUD workgroup). In addition to her research, she is dedicated to teaching and mentorship, including serving as the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and the Neural and Behavioral Sciences Graduate Program Director, primary mentor and/or committee member to several NIH funded (e.g., F31, K01) pre- and post-doctoral fellows, and leading several courses and lectures in the areas of psychiatric and genetic epidemiology both at Downstate and in the greater New York region.
