International Midwifery Project: Current Project

During the summer of 2001, the second midwifery international exchange program was launched by Professor Aleida Llanes-Oberstein. The project encompasses a partnership with Kingston University in London, England.

Internationally, the midwifery model of care in the developed countries has been associated with lower maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Though it is a minority model in the United States, it is the standard in most other developed countries. The British national health care system has a well established history of successfully integrating the midwifery model of care in the provision of health care services to women and children. This national health care system, which fully integrates midwifery care , offers a wealth of learning opportunities for both students and faculty. A mutual understanding of the health care systems in both the United States and Britain and familiarity of the respective scope of practice of midwives enhance the view of health care from a global perspective. The international exchange has potential for cross-fertilization of concepts and models of healthcare, and has a positive impact on midwifery education and practice.
