Downstate Summer Research Program

Due to COVID-19 and campus access policies, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program is now cancelled for 2022, but is expected to resume in 2023.

Application Form

Recommendation Form

SUNY School of Graduate Studies provides research internships for a eight- to ten- week period during the summer for undergraduates currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors. Minorities are encouraged to apply. This program is intended for students who are seriously planning to pursue a Ph.D. degree in biomedical sciences.

Research projects are under individual faculty sponsorship. All research is substantive, requiring the full-time commitment of the student. Weekly work in progress meetings are held. An abstract, a write-up of at least 2 pages of the work and an oral presentation are required at the end of the session.

Eligibility

The Downstate Summer Research Program is offered to full-time students enrolled in appropriate programs at their home institutions. Admission is competitive; only students in good academic standing will be considered.

Award

Student Assistantships of $3,000 will be provided to accepted applicants who are both competitive and accepted by funded faculty sponsors. The School of Graduate Studies and the faculty sponsor will share the cost of the Student Assistantship equally. Arrangements for a sponsor will not be made until the application is reviewed. Assistantships are normally disbursed at the end of the internship.

Application

Completed applications must be received by Friday, April 22, 2022. Applicants will be notified no later than the first week of May of their acceptance. Complete applications will include this form, at least one letters of recommendation (form enclosed) from faculty members who are familiar with the quality of the applicant's work, and an official undergraduate transcript. The complete applications should be sent to:
