Program Overview

The SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Department of Urology offers a 5-year residency program committed to the advancement of the profession of urology through excellence in education, scholarly activity, research, clinical care and community service.

We have carefully selected specific institutions that will expose the residents to both a range of patient populations as well as a variety of faculty members with different training backgrounds and philosophies.

The residency is structured as follows:

PGY-1:

• 6 months at the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System Hospital Urology / 6 months General Surgery

PGY-2:

• 4 months at the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System Hospital – Brooklyn Campus
• 4 months at University Hospital of Brooklyn / Kings County Hospital Center
• 4 months at The Brooklyn Hospital Center

PGY-3:

• 4 months at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
• 4 months at Kings County Hospital Center
• 4 months at University Hospital of Brooklyn / Kings County Hospital Center

PGY-4:

• 4 months at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
• 4 months at South Nassau Communities Hospital
• 4 months at Coney Island Hospital

PGY-5:

• 4 months at The Brooklyn Hospital Center
• 4 months at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
• 4 months at Kings County Hospital Center / University Hospital of Brooklyn

At the end of each rotation, each faculty member formally evaluates our residents. Likewise, each resident evaluates all faculty members they encounter during that specific rotation.

All urology residents, including PGY-1 residents, take the AUA in-service examination on a yearly basis. Weekly conference aids in the preparation of this examination and, in turn, this examination helps prepare our residents for the Part 1 examination of the American Board of Urology. Dr. Weiss takes the same exam as the residents each year as a challenge to all the residents (and himself!)

Urology Conference & Resident Education

Didactic conferences are held every Wednesday from 7-9 A.M.

The first hour is devoted to a specific urologic topic that is assigned to and presented by a resident. The second hour is dedicated to case presentations prepared by our resident at various rotations.

In addition, our residents actively participate in:

• Morbidity and Mortality conferences
• Journal Club
• Reading and discussion of AUA Updates
• Weekly management conferences of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (via Bluejeans platform)

Resident education is further supplemented by lectures given by core faulty and visiting professor conferences in various urologic subspecialties.

Additional Information About the Program

• SUNY Downstate Department of Urology pays for all PGY-3 residents to attend the AUA Basic Science Course in Philadelphia, PA.
• The New York section of the AUA hosts the F.C. Valentine Residents Essay Contest and Residents Debate Night on a yearly basis. Our residents are expected to participate in both activities.
• SUNY Downstate offers travel stipends for residents to participate in local, national, and international meetings for presentation of their research.
