This contest is open to urology residents and pre-urology medical students for the 15 ACGME approved urology residency programs in the geographic area of the New York Section of the AUA. The event is co-sponsored by the New York Section of the AUA and the Section on Urology of the New York Academy of Medicine. Approximately 120 papers are submitted for consideration each year. 2008 Marc Goldstein, MD (Urology, 1980)
An alumnus of the College of Medicine at SUNY Downstate, Marc Goldstein is a prominent surgeon and leader in reproductive medicine. His expertise in male reproductive microsurgery has helped thousands of couples make the successful journey from infertility to parenthood. Board-certifiied in urologic surgery, Dr. Goldstein is internationally known for his pioneering work in vasectomy reversals and repair of varicoceles and blockages. In 1984, he developed a microsurgical method of varicocelectomy, the most common operation for the treatment of infertility in men. He has sinced performed over 3,000 procedures with the lowest reported failure and complication rates. Similarly, his microsurgical technique for reversing vasectomy has yielded the highest reported sperm return and pregnancy rates. The first American surgeon to be trained in and to perform the Chinese method of no-scalpel vasectomy, Dr. Goldstein recently introduced the no-needle, no scalpel vasectomy technique to the Northeast.
Currently, Dr. Goldstein is the Matthew P. Hardy Distinguised Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Urology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Surgeon-in-Chief, Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, at Weill Cornell Medical Center. He also is senior scientist with the Population Council's Center for Biomedical Research, located on the campus of Rockefeller University.
After graduating summa cum laude from Downstate in 1972, Dr. Goldstein did his residency in general surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He spent three years overseas as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force, attaining the rank of major, before returning to Downstate to train in urology. he continued his postgraduate training in reproductive physiology at the Population Council's Center for Biomedical Research.
Dr. Goldstein has produced more than 230 scholarly articles, book chapters, and books. He is a member of a dozen national and international professional societies and past-president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
In 1997 he received the Master Teacher in Urology Award from the College of Medicine Alumni Association and in 2002 was awarded Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He has been honored by the American Infertility Association for "outstanding commitment to family building" and is the recipient of the 2002 John Kingsley Lattimer Award in Urology from the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America and the 2007 Howard and Georgeanna Jones Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Fertility Association.
2009 Tom F. Lue, MD (Urology, 1981)
Tom F. Lue is one of the most respected names in urology today. Internationally recognized for having revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of male sexual disorders, he continues to make major contributions through his basic and clinical research.
Dr. Lue is also a leader in medical education. He is t'he first to hold the Emil Tanagho Endowed Chair in Clinical Urology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where he serves as vice chair of urology and medical director of the Knuppe Molecular Urology Laboratory. The director of the clinical fellowship in sexual medicine and co-director of the andrology fellowship at UCFS, he has trained more than 70 postgraduate physicians and scientists, many of whom have gone on to prominent careers in research and academic medicine.
After graduating with highest honors from Taiwan's Kaohsiung Medical College, Dr. Lue completed a surgical internship at Jewish Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, a surgery residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, followed by a urology residency at SUNY Downstate under former chairman, Keith Waterhouse, MD, and Richard Macchia, MD, the current chairman of urology. Dr. Lue joined the faculty at UCSF in 1982. He continues to support Downstate in many ways, including mentoring medical students and residents and contributing financial support for resident education.
An expert in penile physiology research, Dr. Lue is a major contributor to the field of organic erectile dysfunction therapy. He and his team were the first to discover the anatomical mechanism of venous compression, necessary for healthy sexual function. Among the first to use injection therapy, he introduced the combination of duplex ultrasound and intracavernous injection that has become the gold standard for diagnosing vascular insufficiency.
Dr. Lue's research on a class of compounds known as PDE5 inhibitors helped explain the mechanism of Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis-the drugs of choice for men with ED. His laboratory has been at the forefront of research on Peyronie's disease, priapism, and stress incontinence and currently is investigating the use of adult stem cells to treat ED, urinary incontinence and several other diseases.
Dr. Lue is widely admired for his ability to connect with patients and talk openly about their most intimate concerns. His long list of publications includes several books for lay readers explaining ED and its treatments. Ranked as one of the nation's top doctors by Men's Health Magazine and Best Doctors in America, he has received many professional honors and awards. He was a recipient of the Gold Cystocope Award from the American Urological Association. He chaired the International Consultation on Sexual Medicine in 2003, which developed guidelines and a new treatment algorithm for men's sexual dysfunction. Dr. Lue is a founding member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the World Chinese Urological Society.
