Training Program to Enhance Cultural Competency in Nursing Homes

Cultural Competency Video

The 38 minute video for the Training Program to Enhance Cultural Competency in Nursing Homes presents the four module program that focuses on three patient populations: African Americans, Latinos, and Caucasians, with an emphasis on the latter on persons of Jewish ancestry. In the video, information and situations are presented to increase care providers' awareness about health beliefs, prejudice, communication styles, use of language and stereotypes. Some vignettes in the video address difficult topics and encourage self-reflection. These topics were derived from focus groups that were held in the participating nursing homes. The ultimate goal of the video is to support the value of differences, appreciate similarities and promote openness and respect for residents.

The video can be used in a small group setting or in a one-on one situation. We would welcome comments and feedback. You may email Dr. Carl Cohen or Umi Muhammed.

We want to especially thank Taphat Tawil of NYC and her professional actors for producing the vignettes in the video, Dec 2008.
