Conferences and Didactic Programs

Core Lecture Series - 1st year
(Fellows in Medicine, Psychiatry, Dentistry):

  • Journal Club (Fellows in Medicine, Psychiatry, and Dentistry): In this joint fellow conference, fellows are assigned a specific topic or review article to present to other trainees and attendings. Following the presentation, the fellow is expected to give a short discussion outlining his/her level of understanding of the topic and raises areas of controversy or uncertainty. This interactive part of the presentation includes input by other trainees and attending faculty.
  • Intensive Summer Program and General Didactic Program (Fellows in Medicine all sessions; Dentistry and Psychiatry selected topics): A summer-intensive series which is held for one-month, three times per week, this is followed by a geriatric medicine didactic series that is held weekly. A minimum of one geriatric medicine faculty attending will be present.
  • Geriatrics Review (exam practice) (Fellow in Medicine): focuses on questions from the Geriatric Review Syllabus. This exercise serves as preparation for the ABIM-Geriatric Medicine Certifying Examination but also helps learners distinguish between the art of answering correctly and what might be valid based on the evidence.
  • Introduction to Research (Fellows in Medicine, Psychiatry, Dentistry): review of basic research methods and statistical techniques
  • Geriatric Psychiatry Case Conference: case discussion of various psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and alcohol and substance abuse
  • Memory Disorders Case Conference (3months for fellows in Medicine and Dentistry: 12 months for fellows in Psychiatry): discussion of new intake into the Alzheimer's center
  • Research with Minority Elderly Persons (Fellows in Medicine, Psychiatry, and Dentistry): discussion of various issues related to conducting research with minority elders (Dr. Sharon McKenzie-Reece, PhD).
  • Geriatric Grand Rounds (Fellows in Medicine, Psychiatry, and Dentistry): monthly program with guest lectures on important topics in geriatric medicine, psychiatry, and oral health.
  • Geriatric Medicine Interdisciplinary Case Conference (Fellows in Medicine, Dentistry and Psychiatry): monthly conference involving physicians from social work and other health professionals
