Training and Clinical Rotations

Clinical Training

Our fellows spend six months at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/University Hospital of Brooklyn and six months at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Hospital Center. The training includes a mix of inpatient and outpatient experiences, focusing on diverse clinical settings such as general medical, surgical, neurology, and intensive care units. Fellows participate in various specialized clinics, including HIV, transplant psychiatry, reproductive psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, pain management, addiction psychiatry, and pediatric consultation-liaison psychiatry. Extensive elective opportunities are available, allowing for a tailored training experience that suits the specific interests and career goals of each fellow.

Accreditation and Certification

This one-year program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Upon successful completion, fellows are eligible to sit for the subspecialty boards in consultation–liaison psychiatry.

Clinical Rotations

Inpatient Rotation: Consultation–Liaison Service

Our inpatient rotations provide fellows with extensive experience in managing complex psychiatric conditions in medically and surgically ill patients across a wide range of hospital services. Fellows conduct comprehensive inpatient consultations, addressing psychiatric symptoms in diverse clinical settings including general medicine, surgery, intensive care units, oncology, neurology, and transplant services. This rotation emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, allowing fellows to work closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop integrated care plans that address both psychiatric and medical needs. This broad exposure ensures that fellows are well-prepared to handle the intricate interplay between mental and physical health in hospitalized patients.

Outpatient Rotations

Our outpatient rotations provide fellows with comprehensive experience in managing a variety of psychiatric conditions across different clinical settings. Fellows rotate through specialized clinics, including HIV Psychiatry, Transplant Psychiatry, Reproductive Health, Neuropsychiatry, Pain Medicine, Addiction Psychiatry and various others, gaining expertise in treating psychiatric symptoms associated with complex medical conditions. This broad exposure ensures that fellows are well-prepared to address the mental health needs of diverse patient populations.
