Do you participate in the Match?

Yes, this training program participates in the match. 

Do you accept applicants with Visas?

Applicants with J-1 Visas are accepted.

How much exposure do trainees get to psychotherapy training?

Psychotherapy training is considered to be a priority in our program. Psychotherapy is covered heavily in our didactics and clinical rotations, with emphasis on CBT, DBT, individual, family and group therapy.

Does the program allow for moonlighting?

Our program has in-house moonlighting opportunities. Fellows who are in good standing within the program are permitted to moonlight with approval by the training director provided they meet the guidelines set out by GME. See the handbook for more details.

Are there opportunities to do research?

We offer a wide array of research opportunities. Fellows have protected time for research or scholarly projects during their first and second years.

Are there any opportunities to do off-site electives?

During the second year of fellowship, trainees work on their scholarly electives which allow them to work with affiliated faculty. Fellows can request alternative arrangements from the training director.

Where do fellows live?

Most fellows live nearby in Brooklyn. Fellows also live in Manhattan, Queens, New Jersey and Long Island. Downstate does not provide housing.

What kind of positions do graduating trainee's choose upon completion of the program?

Recent graduates have taken positions in a variety of clinical settings including outpatient, and inpatient services, the public sector, academic institutions and private practice.  Many stay in the tri-state area.
