Cornea, External Disease, & Refractive Surgery Service

University Ophthalmic Consultants provides subspecialty consultation, treatment and surgery in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at University Hospital at Downstate.

Consultations are offered for patients with conjunctival scarring diseases, including chemical burns and Steven Johnson Syndrome; corneal stromal dystrophies and degenerations; corneal endothelial disorders; herpetic disease (HSV, VZV); corneal ulcers; ocular trauma; and keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) or dry eyes.

Testing

Ancillary corneal testing is available either in conjunction with a consult visit or by specific appointment. Test results are interpreted by one of the cornea specialists.

Tests offered include computerized Pentacam corneal tomography, endothelial cell counts, corneal pachymetry, and anterior segment photography.

Corneal Surgery

Surgical services offered by division specialists include all types of corneal transplantation and keratoprosthesis, plus a full range of refractive surgery services, including laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). No-fee consultations are available to patients wishing to learn if they are promising candidates for refractive surgery.

Refractive Surgery (LASIK, PRK)

If you’re looking for an alternative to glasses or contact lenses for vision correction, you may be a candidate for refractive surgery.

Here at SUNY Downstate, we offer both laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) to help you obtain crisp vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses. LASIK and PRK are two of the most common types of refractive surgeries.

In people who rely on glasses or contact lenses for clear vision, the shape of their eyes causes them see near and/or far objects blurry.

In LASIK, a thin flap is created on the front of the eye (cornea) to re-shape it. The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye. The re-shaping of the cornea allows the light entering the eye to be focused perfectly onto the back of the eye, allowing a person to see clear and sharp images. In PRK, the front of the eye is re-shaped without a flap. Both are excellent options.
